In July 2013 I posted an article to the Framingham Patch about how to search for home with in-law apartment. You can read it here: patch.com/massachusetts/framingham/the-search-for-a-home-with-an-inlaw-apartment. What I did not mention in the article is that at the time my husband and I were trying to decide whether to do an in-law apartment for his then 82-year-old mother who no longer wanted to live by herself in her single-family home in Framingham.
My mother-in-law wanted to live with us. Yes, us. After much debate, we decided it was the right thing to do, so we hired an architect and a contractor, started on the permits, and within six months had a 400sf in-law apartment with a living/kitchen area, bedroom, potentially handicap accessible bathroom with a washer and dryer, a front door that's accessible from the driveway, and a back door with deck. It's not big, but it's just big enough.
More recently, I was able to help one of my oldest and dearest friends in her family's search for a house with in-law potential, or an existing in-law apartment for her parents. When I got the call that she and her wife had made the decision, my heart simply burst. I was so proud of her decision and happy for their future together. After seeing many houses, they knew when they found "the one" for them. It sat on a hill up a long private driveway, had a walk-out lower level with a three-room suite, and a gorgeous Gunite pool, which was a bonus since they were giving up a pool that they loved. The only challenge was that other people saw the value in this property as well.....other people in search of the perfect house for in-laws! After pulling out all the stops (it wasn't easy) their offer was accepted, and they lived happily ever after.
It is so gratifying to help people move towards their life goes. Homes are so much more than dwellings or shelter. Homes are where memories are made, where individuals and families find peace and comfort, and finding my clients their next home, well, that makes my job unlike any other.
